Who is the course aimed at?

This course is aimed at carers or domestic staff who have attended a basic Moving and Handling course

Only staff who have already attended a moving and handling course within the last 12 months should book the Refresher course

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Learners must be appropriately dressed to attend Moving and Handling training, for example, clothing should be comfortable and provide ease of movement, short skirts should be avoided.

Open toed shoes MUST NOT be worn due to the high risk of foot injury, learners wearing open toed shoes WILL NOT be allowed to participate and your employer will still be charged as it will be marked as a non-attendance.

At the end of this course all learners will:

Have an increased confidence in applying the laws, principles, and practice of Moving and Handling

This will include being able to

  1. Define moving and handling
  2. Be aware of statistics surrounding Musculoskeletal Disorders and injuries at work
  3. Identify and demonstrate an understanding of at least 5 regulations under the Health and Safety at Work Act
  4. Review laws that protect an individual’s rights and promote safety and wellbeing
  5. Recognise the mechanics and structure of the spine
  6. Provide four examples of inefficient movement behaviours
  7. Demonstrate the efficient movement principles when moving objects
  8. Identify at least 4 potential hazards within the TILE(O) risk assessment

People handlers will also be able to:

  1. Demonstrate safe ways of supporting a person to stand / walk / sit back down / move forwards and backwards in a chair / support a person to stand using equipment
  2. Demonstrate safe ways of supporting a person to fit a sling and hoist from bed and chair / safe use of slide sheets / bed management systems (Wendy Lett sheets) / falls management
