The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that all CQC registered service providers must ensure their staff have training on learning disability and autism that is appropriate to their role. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the Government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff to undertake. The training is delivered in 2 Tiers; staff need to complete either Tier 1 or Tier 2 and both tiers consist of 2 parts.

The first part of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 training is an eLearning module and handbook which can be accessed on the Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Integrated Care System (ICS) Learning Management System here or via the eLearning for healthcare website here.

oliver mcgowanThe Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training.

The second part of the training is as follows:

For Tier 1 - a one-hour live webinar, suitable for people who require general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.

For Tier 2 - a full day face to face training session, suitable for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people or people with a learning disability.

When determining whether, following completion of the eLearning, staff need to access a Tier 1 webinar or Tier 2 face to face training it may be useful to refer to the Tier Guidance for Employers Guide.

Adult social care providers in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin can currently access free Part 2 Tier 1 or Tier 2 Sessions via the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin ICS. Unfortunately, adult social care providers in Cheshire are unable to access this training.

No arrangements are currently in place to provide free Part 2 training for adult social care providers in Cheshire. Care providers who wish to make their own arrangements in respect of Part 2 training are advised to consult the list of training providers and approved trainers which is available on the Health Education England website here.

Please note that if a care provider chooses to arrange Part 2 training through their own training provider/trainer, the cost of this will need to be borne by the provider.
