Two of Partners in Care’s Training Officers who specialise in moving and handling visited The Friends of Parkies in St Martins, Oswestry on 9 July 2025 to share practical techniques and tips for people who are supporting a loved one living with Parkinson’s.

Everyday tasks such as getting up from a chair or walking into a different room can present real challenges for people living with the condition, but the methods that social care professionals use can often be adopted by family and friends.

The trainers demonstrated techniques such as supporting someone to stand safely, sizing and correctly using walking aids, simple techniques for getting dressed, and helping an uninjured person from the floor to a chair after a fall. They were able to help with some specific challenges being faced by members of the group, and have also shared a resource sheet that includes links to videos demonstrating the techniques covered on the day.

The session was made possible by funding from Telford & Wrekin Council and Shropshire Council through their grant allocation under the Department of Health and Social Care’s Accelerating Reform Fund. The funding has also supported a programme of training sessions in first aid and moving and handling for unpaid carers which will continue until the end of November 2025.

If you are an unpaid carer and would like to join one of these sessions please contact Partners in Care for more information.
